Agentic SEO, explained: search built for agents and run by them
More than half of web traffic is now bots, crawlers, and AI agents. Your next customer increasingly asks ChatGPT instead of Googling. And the content teams that win are using agents to do work that used to take departments. All three facts point at the same term: agentic SEO. The term has a definition problem. Most articles use it for one idea and ignore the other. Here is the full picture. ## The two halves of agentic SEO **Half one: SEO for agents.** Your site used to have one important reader: Google's crawler, plus the humans who clicked through. Now AI agents read your site to answer questions, compare products, and even act on behalf of users. If those agents cannot parse what you do, you do not exist in their answers. This half is about legibility. **Half two: SEO by agents.** SEO operations are repetitive: research, drafting, interlinking, refreshing, monitoring. AI agents now do this work continuously instead of a content team doing it in monthly sprints. This half is about operations. An agentic SEO practice runs both. Sites legible to machines, operated by machines, directed by humans. ## Half one: making your site agent-readable **Entity schema.** Structured data that tells machines what things are: your organization, products, articles, authors, offers. Schema has been an SEO tactic for a decade. In the agentic era it graduates from nice-to-have to primary interface, because agents prefer structured facts over prose parsing. **llms.txt.** A plain-text ind
